FREE?!?! Who doesn’t love free? But free college…wouldn’t that be a dream come true? Well, it is true! Right here in Chatham County! It is called the Chatham County Promise.
“Central Carolina Works (CCW) is a collaboration between the three local education agencies served by Central Carolina Community College; the college administration and faculty, and the business communities of Chatham, Harnett, and Lee counties. The project targets dual enrollment participation in the three county service area, while simultaneously building faculty, administration, and curriculum capacity for guiding students and families through the full range of educational and career pathways-both Career and Technical Education (CTE) and College Transfer (CT).”
CCW’s mission is to promote skills and knowledge that will ready students for success in college and careers leading to economic benefits for individuals and communities through increased participation in North Carolina’s Career and College Promise program.
The Chatham County Commissioners voted in December 2018 to pass the Chatham County Promise, an agreement with Central Carolina Community College (CCCC) to fund up to two years of free tuition for residents graduating public high school, private school, and homeschool.
The graduating student will attend Central Carolina Community College as a full-time degree or credential seeking curriculum student beginning the fall semester following his or her high school graduation.
The eligibility requirements are as follows:
-Resident of Chatham County
– Successful Completion of College Credit During High School with at least 4 courses or 12 credit hours. College credit can be earned through Career & College Promise, AP/IB/CLEP, articulated credit for high school CTE coursework, etc. All applicable curriculum credit(s) must be submitted to the Records Office at CCCC to count toward a student’s eligibility.
-Complete the “Central Carolina Promise/K14” Interest Form
-Complete the FAFSA and submit all requested verification documents and complete CCCC’s Foundation scholarship application annually
-Complete the North Carolina Residency Determination process
-Complete the Admissions Application
-Submit your Final High School Transcript
Textbooks, supplies, and supplemental materials are not covered by these funds. All funding from federal and state grants, scholarships, and outside funding must be exhausted before Chatham County Promise begins paying. Chatham Promise works as a reimbursement program, where CCCC will bill county government for tuition costs and fees.
Promise/K14 virtual information sessions are held at 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month.
