“Furry Friends, Cozy Covers” Creative Teaching Grant benefits students and shelter animals

Sherry Thurman is a middle school teacher of exceptional children (EC) at Bonlee School. Her daughter, Leann Dunn, is an EC teacher at Chatham Central High School. (Students in the Exceptional Children program may have a disability or are gifted but need special education services.) Together, the mother/daughter duo submitted a grant to the Chatham Education Foundation titled “Furry Friends, Cozy Covers.” Though the purpose of the grant was to have these students make blankets for dogs at a local animal shelter, the outcomes of the project were so much greater.

Thurman explained that the grant not only allowed the students to practice their fine motor skills by measuring, cutting and tying fabric to create fleece blankets, it also helped them gain a greater awareness of the needs of animals, particularly those in shelters. “Our students have a deep love for animals, especially dogs and cats,” said Thurman, “and they were eager to help as they thrive on feeling valued and take great joy in helping others.”

As part of the grant, the students got to personally deliver 40 handmade blankets to the Chatham County Animal Shelter. “The visit to the shelter was a highlight of the project, offering students a chance to see the impact of their work firsthand,” said Thurman.

The trip also gave the students a chance to strengthen their confidence, teamwork, and transition skills, which Thurman explains are key elements in preparing the students for future opportunities, such as the middle schoolers moving onto high school. “Adjusting to new environments and routines isn’t easy for these students,” Thurman said, “and so these types of experiences are crucial as they move to new grade levels and settings.”

“We are incredibly grateful to the Chatham Education Foundation for making this project possible. Their generous support has provided our students with a truly enriching experience while helping them make a positive impact on our community. Thank you for believing in our students and helping us bring ‘Furry Friends, Cozy Covers’ to life!” — Sherry Thurman & Leann Dunn
