Here is what we know. The Department of Education is responsible for ensuring our most vulnerable students receive a quality, accessible education. This order will have far reaching impacts in our rural and low-income communities and on children with disabilities and special needs. In Chatham County, 16% of our school system’s budget comes from this department — $4M+ and 50+ staff positions.
Here’s what’s going to happen. Our teachers and administrators are going to wake up every day and give every student the education they deserve. This will never change. Our Superintendent says we will be legally compliant and morally sound. Some programs will change. Some may be eliminated completely. But we will keep loving Chatham’s students – from Bennett to North Chatham, Moncure to Silk Hope.
But we need your help. The Chatham Education Foundation is a critical source of funding for programs that Chatham County Schools can’t cover with local, state, and federal funds. We provide resources at the district level and directly to individual schools. As this legislation evolves, we must be prepared to respond to our school system’s changing needs. Please give today.
The Chatham County Board of Education meets next on Monday April 14 at 5:30pm.
Come and show your Superintendent and your elected board that you are with them, that you support our schools, and that we’re going to weather these challenges together, as a united Chatham.
